Me vs. The Fanny Pack
Fanny packs, bum bags, hip holders (just came up with that), whatever you prefer to call them... DON'T THINK “They're not for me” and start sliding your mouse across, hear me out! Because I would have said the same however, they have won me over this weekend. I initially thought they only looked cool on candid street-style snaps of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, and thought I'd be unable to pull it off, but then I came across a fanny pack with bright pink feathers- granted, this might sound atrocious to you- however for someone who enjoys bright and wacky things, this suddenly had to be mine... Even though I didn't know how i'd wear it or if i'd wear it.
The next day, I was looking my new acquisition, with a friend having freshly insulted my “bizarre” purchase asking me to “Please return it.” I was of course now determined to wear it. Added to that was the fact that I'd locked myself out of my house 2 days before, something that keeps happening when I forget my handbag as I walk out of my door. I think subconsciously I keep looking at my large heavy shoulder bag not wanting to carry it around in the wet, cold, windy weather.
That day I wore a light wash pair of 'mom' jeans and strapped the fanny pack on wearing it high on my waist with this seasons trendy trainers on the bottom. I instantly felt funky and free. I walked for half an hour to a museum and was able to use both hands to munch my Pret-a-manger on the way and sip my coffee. The nightmare of having my, what would normally be big heavy hand bag on my shoulder, that would keep slipping off and having to push it back over my shoulder, whilst also having people pushing into my bag, or having to be conscious of naughty pickpockets trying to get into my tote whilst walking down oxford street, was now no longer an issue.
I had a lovely day with my necessities strapped to my waist, easily whipping out my card or lipstick when needed and wandered around the museum feeling carefree. I'm now converted and looking for more, I'd like a little collection. I think they are fabulous for travelling, site-seeing and for the summer when you don't want to be carrying something around in the heat. They're practical and cool and the other perk is that because they are smaller and less material is used to make them, they tend to cost less than the bags which you would usually chose. Not forgetting that they can actually be very flattering: if you have a small waist or hourglass figure, then this is also a fabulous way to highlight it!
The HEWI teams favourite bum bags include the Gucci Marmont Belt Bag (in stores for between £765 to £885, on HEWI for less;) they have velvet, canvas, leather, embellished and in all colours, so there is something for everyone at Gucci, they have gone all-in for these bags. We are also a fan of the Vintage bum bags; the vintage Dior print looks fabulous in the canvas red or blue. The Louis Vuitton monogram leather one is loved by and often spotted on Kendall Jenner; it's a classic print and colour that you can wear with almost anything and with Logo Mania being so trendy now, you'll be right on point. If you'd like to start with something simple and classic, then keep an eye out for Prada’s black bum bags.
I am now keeping my eyes on, and my alerts set for HEWI’s 'new in'. I am especially craving the red leather belt bag from Gucci that I want to take on a night out! Dance floor and Michael Jackson moves, here we come... Don't knock it until you've tried wearing it and enjoy it when you do :)
